Built specifically for Réseau Breton by Etablissements Piguet in Lyon-Anzin (France), those 0-6-0 0-6-0 Mallet locomotives were the most powerful meter gauge mallets ever produced and used in France.
These locos were intended to be used for heavy freight trains. Smaller 0-4-0 0-4-0 had already shown mallet locos were relevant for this railway but the increase of traffic and need for more power leaded to define the 0-6-0 0-6-0 as follows : haul 350 tons at 45 km/h on level track.
From this specification, 9 locos were ordered to Piguet in 1911. Because of WWI , the last loco from the batch was delivered in Mai 1915.
When completed in the factory, N. 410 and 413 were requisitionned to go on the German border and returned on Réseau Breton by the end of the War.
Due to war ennemies activities, the 9th loco was never finished.

The locomotives had the following characteristics :
Length :11 mètres (36ft)
Cylinders  :  4 ( 2 HP, 2 LP compound)
Valve Gear  :  Walschaerts
Wheels diameter :  1.01 mètres (4ft 3in.)
Weight    : 40 tons empty / 54.5 t on working order
Boiler pressure    : 12 bars (170psi)
All the locomotives were made by Piguet

  • Locomotives 410 and 416 were delivered in 1914, 417 in 1915.
  • The locomotives were used on the Réseau Breton until its dismiss in 1967.
2 Locomotives have been kept, the others were scrapped.
  • N. 415 is nowadays on a roundabout in Carhaix (Brittany) and its status doesn't let a lot of hope as far as a preservation/restoration in working order is concerned.
  • N. 413 had been bought by a private person to be used on the High Vivarais line. During the preparation of the loco, it was noticed that a piston rod was broken and at the last minute the N. 417 was shipped, fitted with N. 413 workplates.
This locomotive is still in hands of a private, waiting for restoration.
Atelier Vaporiste had the opportunity to take most of the measurements on this last locomotive and our model is based upon those. Thanks to the owner who let us take some measurements in the past.

I would like to thanks warmly also Gordon Gravett, author of the very inspirative book 'Réseau Breton, a Rail Network in Brittany' (Oakwood Press) for the quality of his book as well as the very nice and kinds discussions we had together.
